CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROPOLIS

Propolis is a waxy resin, it has a complex composition and a viscous consistency. Propolis is produced by the bees from vegetable matter. They use it to protect and repair the beehive. It has been used from ancient times in a variety of ways.

Nowadays the effects of propolis in medicine and biology are being researched. At the moment, propolis is important as a dietary supplement and it is also used in the pharmaceutical industry.

Bees use propolis to repair and protect the beehive against infections, and consequently, beehives are one of the most sterile natural places ever known.

Production of propolis

Propolis is collected in different ways. The grid design, for example, is the least aggressive for bees and the one that offers the highest quality. In Avi Lluís all the propolis that we produce is extracted directly from the grids.

Properties of propolis

Propolis contains essential oils that give it a particular aroma. Its colour varies from yellow to dark depending on the botanical origin and the time of collection. It has a bitter taste and its consistency goes from hard to soft.
